An Adreno Cortico Tropic Hormone (ACTH) test measures the level of ACTH in the blood to check for problems with the pituitary gland and adrenal glands . ACTH is made in the pituitary gland in response to the release of another hormone, called corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH). In turn, the adrenal glands then make a hormone called cortisol, which helps your body manage stress. Cortisol is needed for life, so its levels in the blood are closely controlled. When cortisol levels rise, ACTH levels normally fall. When cortisol levels fall, ACTH levels normally rise. The hormone 17-OH progesterone is an important hormone produced by the adrenal glands. The body uses 17-OH progesterone and certain enzymes to make cortisol, a hormone involved in stress. This test measures the amount of 17-OHP in the blood to detect and/or evaluate congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), an inherited condition that results in decreased adrenal cortisol and aldosterone and increased male sex hormone (androgen) production. Increased levels of 17-OH progesterone in the blood can indicate a condition called congenital adrenal hyperplasia. The 17-OH progesterone test is a blood test that checks for this condition.
