SPL-KIDNEY FUNCTIONING TEST

SPL-KIDNEY FUNCTIONING TEST

Overview

You have two kidneys on either side of your spine that are each approximately the size of a human fist. They?re located posterior to your abdomen and below your rib cage.

Your kidneys play several vital roles in maintaining your health. One of their most important jobs is to filter waste materials from the blood and expel them from the body as urine. The kidneys also help control the levels of water and various essential minerals in the body. In addition, they?re critical to the production of:

vitamin D red blood cells hormones that regulate blood pressure If your doctor thinks your kidneys may not be working properly, you may need kidney function tests. These are simple blood and urine tests that can identify problems with your kidneys.

You may also need kidney function testing done if you have other conditions that can harm the kidneys, such as diabetes or high blood pressure. They can help doctors monitor these conditions.

Preparation(Before)

measurements of kidney, liver, and thyroid function, as well as blood counts, are not influenced by fasting. However, fasting is required before commonly ordered tests for glucose (blood sugar) and triglycerides (part of the cholesterol, or lipid, panel) for accurate results.

Normal range

Urea:

2.5-7.8 mmol/L

BUN:

7 to 20 mg/dL

Uric Acid:

Adult Female: 2.4 to 6.0 mg/dL

Adult Male: 3.4 to 7.0 mg/dL

Children: 3 to 4 mg/dL

Creatinine:

Adult males: 0.6 to 1.2 mg/dL

Adult females: 0.5 to 1.1 mg/dL

BUN/Creatinine Ratio:

      12:1 to 20:1

Increased levels of each of these parameters can indicate a number of conditions and not necessarily health disorders. For example, increased creatinine levels can occur due to heavy exercise, consumption of cooked meat, or taking protein supplements apart from kidney diseases. Thus, these parameters are also considered while interpreting the tests. Further tests are performed to confirm any health disorders.
